Shipping and rail transportation are completely stable, and there will be no emergencies such as trucks breaking down or running out of oil on the road. Uncertainty about trucking

Sea Freight

China is approximately 7,775 kilometers from Mongolia, but it may take longer to traverse this distance due to the sea route defined by the body of water.
Shipping by sea is determined by the location of the port used and the nature of the goods being transported. Very large shipments are usually shipped by sea.
While it took time to get to the final destination, it turned out to be the cheapest ever.
Before choosing this shipping method, one must be familiar with the different ports in China and Mongolia.

Air Freight

Due to the limited air service facilities currently limited to passenger flights in Mongolia, we can provide a wide range of air-land intermodal service solutions for volume sensitive (large volume) or oversized and heavy air cargo from all over the world. Shipping from China to South Korea

Sea freight

South Korea is a country located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. It borders North Korea, its only neighbor to the north. The country is surrounded by water, with the Yellow Sea to the east, the East China Sea to the south, and the Sea of Japan to the west. As indirect neighbors, China, Japan and Russia are quickly reached by sea from South Korea. This situation explains why there are only two modes of freight that reach the country, sea and air. It influenced South Korea to build one of the world's greatest fleets and state-of-the-art port infrastructure.

Shipping time

Shipping to South Korea takes a long time, usually 5 to 8 working days, and some important issues are that these times are for normal circumstances. Sometimes unexpected events happen and they make the process a little longer!

Shipping fee

In general, ocean shipping is always privileged because of two big benefits: You can transfer large quantities of goods at very competitive prices. Regardless of whether you need a one-time transshipment, or more regular multiple transshipments, ocean freight will surely meet all your needs and requirements.

Air freight

The biggest advantage of air freight is its speed. Items leaving China can arrive in Korea within 2-3 days. This is the best option for high-value items as they take less time in transit. However, with this speed, there are some tradeoffs.

Air freight is usually more expensive than rail or sea. It's also better for small items, as airlines have weight and volume restrictions. Air freight also uses more fuel than alternatives, so if carbon footprint is an ethical issue for you and your company, you'll want to choose ocean or rail freight.

Air freight is divided into two categories: general cargo and special cargo. As the name suggests, most items are considered ordinary goods.

Example of general cargo:
  • Electronic
  • Jewelry
  • Medicine
  • Personal accessories such as watches and wallets

Special cargo has different regulations than general cargo and may involve additional inspections.

Examples of special goods:
  • Fragile items
  • Dangerous goods, such as certain chemicals
  • Items that require temperature control, such as seafood

Air transit time

Door to door, a plane arrives in South Korea from any airport in China in up to 6 hours. Courier (Express) will allow you to transfer all of your shipments to the exact address in South Korea in less than 3 days. With regular air freight, from a Chinese supplier to your South Korean address, your goods will be shipped within a week.

Door to door shipping

Requesting door-to-door shipping from China to South Korea will provide you with a stress-free import experience. We'll pick up, ship, and deliver directly to your warehouse, office or home from your Chinese supplier. With TJ chinafreight, you can be sure to get the best shipping rates and prompt delivery.
Door-to-door couriers handle items of all sizes and weights. Light cargo is generally shipped fast by air, while heavy cargo is shipped by sea, and the shipping time is longer. But since they come right to your door, they are the most convenient option.

Necessary documents

  • Bill of Lading or Air Waybill (BL)
  • Packing List
  • Valid return
  • Certificate of Origin (CO)
  • Licenses, certificates... (if any)
  • Commercial invoice
  • Proof of insurance (if any)
  • Detailed Description of Duty Exemptions

Common problem

How to import duty-free from China to South Korea?

It mainly depends on the type of product you are importing. The FTA signed by China and South Korea came into effect in 2015. The vast majority of China's imports to South Korea are agricultural products, and vice versa are automobiles. The FTA mainly applies to such commodities. So, if you want to import agricultural products, you will definitely benefit from tax exemption. If you're importing other types of goods, your chances of getting an exemption are slim.

What is the cheapest way to ship from China to South Korea?

Sea freight is the cheapest way to ship from China to South Korea. However, prices often vary based on several factors. Keep in mind that FCL and LCL prices are different and which one is most economical for your situation will depend on the particularities of the particular cargo.

How to reduce shipping costs?

If you are familiar with your destination country, we invite you to consider door-to-port service. However, this is not possible for every destination. You can choose to pack your inventory yourself to reduce the cost of origin. Remember, your personal packing items must still be professionally loaded by our overseas moving company. Packing your own goods must also be professional export shipping and can only be insured for total loss.

Freight rates on the US Eastbound routes have risen!

In order to avoid the uncertainty brought about by the labor negotiations at ports on the west coast of the United States, many American importers continued to choose the route calling on the east coast of the United States, which pushed up the container freight rate of the east coast of the United States and further strengthened.
Congestion at East Coast ports is increasing, and the situation is likely to increase further in the short term as more ships arrive.

"The high-end market is starting to pick up again, especially given the diversification of the U.S. West Coast at this time," said a U.S. logistics provider. "Queues at U.S. East Coast ports are starting to build up, so it's getting pretty tricky to ship from the U.S."

Heard that the US West Coast has premium booking rates as high as $16,000/FEU, while the US East Coast remains premium. Spot bookings are said to be as high as $17,500/FEU, not far from the peak at the end of 2021, when prices were in the $20,000/FEU range.

As in other regions, the real problem in the market is not sea freight, but inland logistics shortages. A lack of chassis and railcars is preventing importers from moving cargo from ports to inland distribution networks.

However, premium rates are not only seen in the trans-Pacific region. Conditions at European ports have deteriorated, with cargo delays prompting some premiums on transatlantic routes to continue or even grow.

"There are serious delays in Europe right now, so we're starting to see some premiums in the transpacific start to pick up," said a U.S. freight forwarder. "The level isn't high, but people pay a price for fast shipping or they end up at the bottom of a growing stack."
These premiums were heard in the $8,500/FEU region for North European to North American East Coast cargo.

In the week ended March 25, the average freight rate for the Southeast Asia-US East route was 17,000-18,000 US dollars/FEU, and the Southeast Asia-US West route was 15,000-16,000 US dollars/FEU, the same as a week ago, but there are some quotations grow rapidly.

On March 25, the freight rate of PCR 25 (Platts Container Freight 25 Index, Southeast Asia-North America East Coast Route) was estimated at US$10,500/FEU, and the freight rate of PCR 23 (Southeast Asia-North America West Coast) was estimated at US$9,500/FEU , which was basically the same as the previous week.

The index of freight rates on the India-Middle East short-haul route rose due to higher bunker fuel costs and increased supply chain uncertainty. On March 25, the freight rate of PCR 33 representing the India West Coast-Middle East route was estimated at US$2,300, up US$200 from the previous month.

Subtle changes in supply and demand, freight rates drop one after another

Supply and demand conditions improved, and freight rates continued to fall. There are many uncertain factors, and the future trend is still unclear.
Recently, the freight rates of major routes in the container shipping market have changed the pace of rising and have continued to decline in the past month. Even so, since the high freight rate in the fourth quarter of last year continued to the first quarter of this year, the current freight rate is still much higher than the same period last year.

Multi-route freight rates drop

According to Drewry data, as of March 17, the World Containerized Freight Index (WCI) was US$8,832.23/FEU, down 3.8% month-on-month and still up 79% compared with the same period in 2021.

In terms of routes, the Shanghai-Rotterdam spot freight rate was US$12,221/FEU, down 4% month-on-month; the Shanghai-Genoa spot freight rate was US$12,619/FEU, up 1% month-on-month; the Shanghai-Los Angeles spot freight rate was US$10,154 /FEU, down 7% month-on-month; Shanghai-New York spot freight rate was US$12,276/FEU, down 5% month-on-month.

On March 18, the China Export Container Freight Index (CCFI) released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange was 3301.10 points, down 1.9% from the previous month. Among them, the freight index of European routes decreased by 1.9% month-on-month, the freight index of Mediterranean routes decreased by 0.5% month-on-month, the freight index of US-West routes decreased by 3.8% month-on-month, and the freight index of US-East routes increased by 2.1% month-on-month.

According to the Ningbo Export Container Freight Index (NCFI) released by the Ningbo Shipping Exchange, as of March 18, the composite index closed at 3,613.9 points, a month-on-month decline for 11 consecutive weeks, down 15.3% from the high level at the end of December 2021, and from the end of February. It fell 8.4%.

Judging from the situation of different routes since the end of February, the freight index of the South America east route decreased by 19.3%, the freight index of the South American west route decreased by 16.7%, the freight index of the Middle East route decreased by 17.6%, the India-Pakistan route decreased by 13.7%, and the freight index of the European route decreased by 13.7%. The price index fell 11.7%, the most significant decline. The average market price of the 40-foot TEU after the price increase in the Europe, South America East, South America West and America West routes fell by more than US$1,500/FEU, and the freight rate fell the most. It can be seen that, in the past month, although the freight rates of some routes remained flat or increased slightly month-on-month, in general, they showed a downward trend.

As far as the single-day freight rate is concerned, in early March, the freight rate trend showed a clear inflection point.

According to Xeneta data, recently, freight rates from China to Europe suffered the largest one-day drop since February 2020. On March 1, the average spot rate on the route fell by nearly $500/FEU to $13,340/FEU. This is the first time since September 2021 that freight rates on this route are below $13,500/FEU.

However, the agency also pointed out that the current freight rates on the Asia-Europe route are still at a very high level compared to before the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2018-2020, the average spot freight rate on this route was only US$1,500/FEU.

Based on this, Zheng Jingwen, a senior analyst at the International Shipping Research Institute of the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center, said in an interview with a reporter from China Shipping Weekly that according to the trend of previous years, the freight rate will indeed drop slightly and briefly in the first quarter.

Qian Hanglu, an industry analyst at Ningbo Shipping Exchange, also said: "This is mainly due to the traditional off-season, which makes the overall freight rate of the container shipping market continue to decline from mid-January to late March. For example, in 2019 In 2021 and 2021, the NCFI composite index has experienced a 10-week decline, with a cumulative decline of 25.7% and 19.4%, respectively."

Huiyang Shipping’s first-quarter profit tripled year-on-year

The crisis in Russia and Ukraine pushed up the freight rate of bulk carriers, and the performance of Huiyang Shipping in March and the first quarter both hit record highs.

On April 6, Huiyang Shipping announced its financial report. The revenue in March was NT$2.203 billion (approximately RMB 486 million), and the self-settled operating profit was NT$1.139 billion (approximately RMB 251 million). The monthly pre-tax profit was NT$1.175 billion (approximately RMB 259 million).

The financial report shows that in the first quarter, Huiyang Shipping’s revenue was NT$5.754 billion (approximately RMB 1.269 billion), and its pre-tax profit was NT$2.777 billion (approximately RMB 612 million), three times that of the same period last year. , a record high for the same period of the previous year, with an average operating profit rate of 48%.

Huiyang Shipping said that the global dry bulk shipping market is still affected by the crisis in Russia and Ukraine. At present, due to the surge in oil prices and the transfer of raw material importing countries to other countries for procurement, the voyage has increased. These factors may increase the freight rate. However, whether the demand for raw materials is It can be fully supplemented by other regions, and the impact of subsequent economic sanctions by various countries still needs to be continuously observed.

On the other hand, the epidemic in mainland China heated up again in late March, and the first-tier cities along the coast were shut down due to epidemic prevention, resulting in a slight decline in the market volume. However, Huiyang Shipping believes that this is a short-term impact, and there is a possibility of demand recovery sex.

In terms of fleet planning, Huiyang Shipping received the 37,800-dwt handy-sized high-specification energy-saving and environmentally friendly bulk carrier "Bunun Treasure" delivered by Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan at the end of March, and has signed a stable charter. Up to now, the company's fleet operates 139 ships, with an average age of 7 years. The fleet size and the proportion of energy-saving ships are in a leading position in the industry.

Looking forward to 2022, Huiyang Shipping still maintains an optimistic attitude. Due to the rising freight market and raw material prices in recent years, the construction cost of bulk carriers has increased by about 30%-40% on average compared with the same period last year. The number of orders on hand for cargo ships is still low, and after the new environmental protection regulations hit the road in 2023, it is expected that the elimination of old ships will make the supply of capacity even tighter, and Huiyang Shipping maintains a consistent and stable ship purchase policy, which will give it a more competitive advantage.

The container shipping market is in short supply, and the price of second-hand ships has skyrocketed

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the supply and demand of the container shipping market has been unbalanced, and the freight rate has skyrocketed. Shipping companies that are "not worried about money" have bought and leased them. The amount of scrap is almost zero.

According to Alphaliner data, container lines have gone on a spree to acquire more than 500 container ships in the second-hand ship market in the past 18 months. Among them, Mediterranean Shipping was the largest buyer, purchasing a total of 169 second-hand ships with a total capacity of 636,900 TEU; followed by CMA CGM, which purchased 62 ships with a total capacity of 207,000 TEU. Maersk Line only ranked third, purchasing 27 ships of 141,600 TEU. The fourth is Wan Hai Shipping, which purchased 23 ships of 139,700 TEU.

ALphaliner pointed out that at the beginning of the market recovery, the price of second-hand ships was still at a low level, which made it a better choice for container shipping companies to buy and lease. At the same time, many small non-operating ship owners (NOO) are struggling on the brink of bankruptcy due to years of low rental income, and it is difficult to resist the high prices offered by container shipping companies.

Currently in the second-hand ship market, container ship prices have soared to record highs. The hot sale situation has also made the scrapping of container ships almost zero, and the capacity in the charter market has plummeted by 1.6 million TEU.

At the same time, orders for new container ships also hit a record high last year. Clarkson's data shows that in 2021, the order volume of container ships will reach 569 ships of 4.3 million TEU, and the contract value is as high as 42.8 billion US dollars. This order level is even 29% higher than the previous record level of 3.3 million TEU in 2007. 3.5 times the average order volume in the 10 years ending in 2020.

Since 2022, there have been 124 new orders in the container ship market, with a total capacity of about 857,600 TEU. It is estimated that the order volume of container ships will remain at a high level after 2022.

South Korean shipbuilding industry returns to No. 1 after 7 years

With its strong performance in the field of LNG ships, the Korean shipbuilding industry has won half of the orders in the global newbuilding market.

According to data released by Clarkson on April 5, in the first quarter of this year, the global new ship order volume was 9.2 million revised gross tons (CGT), a decrease of 41% compared with the same period last year. Among them, South Korea undertook 4.57 million CGT, and the global The market share reached 49.7%, an increase of more than 12 percentage points from 37.2% in the first quarter of last year; China has undertaken 3.855 million CGT, and the global market share has dropped from 46% in the first quarter of last year to 41.9%; Japan has undertaken 248,400 CGT , the global market share fell to 2.7% from 12.8% in the same period last year.

This is the first time in the past seven years that a Korean shipping company has ranked first in the world in terms of orders received in the first quarter. At the same time, this is also the first time since Clarkson started statistics in 1996 that the number of orders received by South Korean shipping companies in the first quarter has reached about 50% of the global market share.

In addition, in March this year, the global order volume for new ships was 3.23 million CGT. The number of orders received by South Korean shipping companies also ranks first in the world in a single month, with a total of 1.64 million CGTs, accounting for 51% of the global share. Chinese shipbuilding companies ranked second with 1.36 million CGT orders, accounting for 42% of the global share.

As of the end of March, the number of global hand-held orders was 94.71 million CGT, an increase of 1.55 million CGT from the end of February. Among them, South Korean shipping companies have the largest increase in orders, reaching 1.12 million CGT; Chinese shipping companies have increased orders by 610,000 CGT, and Japanese orders have decreased by 240,000 CGT.

Industry insiders in South Korea said that last year, South Korea handed over the world's largest new ship order volume to China. In the first quarter of this year, the global new ship order transaction volume decreased significantly year-on-year, but South Korean shipbuilding companies worked hard and preemptively seized the place. The order finally overtook China to regain the first position. This is mainly due to the large number of LNG ship orders undertaken by South Korean shipbuilders. Regarding the reasons for the significant decrease in the number of orders received by Japanese shipbuilding companies, a Korean industry official explained that the data of the Japanese shipbuilding industry traditionally lags behind, so there may be changes in the future.

According to statistics, among the 38 large-scale LNG ships of 174,000 cubic meters or more ordered globally in the first quarter of this year, South Korea has undertaken 27 vessels, accounting for 71%; China has undertaken 11 vessels, accounting for 29%. In addition, a total of 44 container ships above 8000TEU have been ordered globally this year, of which South Korea has undertaken 21 ships, accounting for 47.7%.

A relevant person in the Korean industry said: "Although the number of new ship orders has decreased this year, Korean ship companies are benefiting from the booming LNG ship market. In the first quarter of this year, the number of LNG ships undertaken by Korean ship companies increased significantly, and the number of orders on hand It is also increasing, and the delivery time has been scheduled to the end of 2025. At present, European countries are looking for alternative sources of Russian energy, and the demand for LNG ships will continue in the future.”

The epidemic will not bring down Shanghai Port and Ningbo Zhoushan Port

Recently, the epidemic prevention and control in Shanghai has been in a severe period, and the infection rate has continued to rise. Shanghai Port cannot survive alone, and is making every effort to coordinate resources from all parties to keep the port open. On the other hand, many truck drivers were diagnosed in Ningbo, and the local government immediately introduced a policy of one nucleic acid per day for truck drivers to further tighten the prevention and control policy. As the two largest ports in the world, Shanghai Port will complete a container throughput of 47.3 million TEU in 2021, and Ningbo Zhoushan Port will complete a cargo throughput of 31.08 million TEU. These two ports account for nearly 40% of the national port container throughput. In this regard, the normal operation of the two ports is related to the smooth global supply chain, and the sensitive market remains highly concerned about this.

Recently, a screenshot of densely crowded ships in the waters near Shanghai circulated on the Internet. The screenshot was accompanied by a caption saying, "Hundreds of ocean-going freighters have been stranded in the open seas of Shanghai, and the supply chain is broken here."

The impact of this round of Shanghai epidemic on international shipping has also aroused high public attention.

On April 2, SIPG also responded to the news of "severe congestion in Shanghai Port": "We have noticed that some media have published false reports on the serious congestion in Shanghai Port, which mentioned that 'Shanghai's port is delayed. The situation is getting more and more serious', 'the number of ships waiting to be loaded and unloaded in Shanghai port has soared to more than 300 this week' and other unverified remarks and pictures, according to the internal data monitoring of Shanghai port, since February, Shanghai port terminal production and operation As usual, there is no congestion of container ships." SIPG further stated that there is absolutely no "congestion comparable to the port congestion in West America" in Shanghai Port. The number of waiting ships is in single digits, and the average number of waiting days is normal.

Previously, it was believed that due to the severe epidemic situation in Shanghai, the transportation of import and export goods was also affected, and some ships calling at Shanghai Port may be diverted to Ningbo Zhoushan Port or Nanjing Port.

On April 6, the "Daily Economic News" reporter asked the relevant person in charge of Ningbo Port (601018.SH) to verify the above situation. The person in charge responded: "The company is now doing a good job of epidemic prevention and control in accordance with the requirements of the superior and the actual situation of the enterprise to ensure the continuous, stable and healthy development of port production. As for the ships that previously berthed at Shanghai Port, they will be moved to Ningbo Zhoushan Port. The situation is not obvious at the moment and we are monitoring it.”

On the same day, a person in charge of a shipping agency in charge of Ningbo also told reporters that from what he knew, Shanghai's port calls are relatively normal, and there has not been a large number of changes to Ningbo port.

At the same time, Ningbo Zhoushan Port had to face the problem of epidemic spillover. From April 4th to 5th, 6 of the 7 cases found in Ningbo City were road freight-related drivers and express service area staff, and one of them was in Beilun District; as a model of anti-epidemic, Ningbo Zhoushan The port quickly made a decision to close some container shipping bases in Beilun District, and organized truck drivers to conduct nucleic acid tests every 24 hours. For example, Ningbo Meidong Container Terminal Co., Ltd. issued a notice on April 3 that truck drivers entering the port area. A free nucleic acid test needs to be completed immediately before entering the port area; at the same time, for foreign vehicles, Ningbo City requires drivers to actively cooperate with nucleic acid testing and antigen testing at the high-speed bayonet. In addition, Ningbo has implemented closed management of staff in the city's expressway service areas, strictly implemented daily nucleic acid testing measures, and suspended refueling operations.

At present, Ningbo Zhoushan Port is still in normal operation as a whole, and the warehouses that were temporarily closed due to the detection of tight connections will also be unsealed from tomorrow. In addition to Ningbo City, two freight drivers in Shaoxing City were also found to be infected with the new crown. The freight drivers and passengers outside the city are required to perform nucleic acid tests every two days on the basis of implementing nucleic acid tests every two days, and each time they return to Shaoxing Expressway.

The port circle (ID: gangkouquan) believes that if the impact of the epidemic expands, the impact of the collection and distribution problem continues to expand, and the ports in the Yangtze River Delta region cannot handle the problem of transportation route configuration, which will be a heavy blow to the global supply chain. of. On the premise of "preventing imports from outside and preventing exports from inside", Shanghai should increase the capacity of waterway barges as soon as possible to transfer the pressure of road collection and distribution, while Ningbo Zhoushan Port must learn lessons and give priority to preventing the spread of the epidemic. The two ports will not be dragged down as the outside world fears, but for a period of time in the future, whether it is the cargo owner, the shipping company, or the port, it will be under the pressure of repeated epidemics.

International air transport knowledge

Eight elements of air freight inquiry:

1. Product name (whether it is dangerous or not)
2. Weight (charges involved), volume (dimensions and whether it's in stock)
3. Packaging (Wooden box or not, with or without pallet)
4. Destination airport (whether it is a basic point or not)
5. Time required (direct flight or transfer flight)
6. Requested flight (different flight services and prices)
7. Types of bills of lading (main and separate orders)
8. Required transportation services (customs declaration method, agency documents, whether customs clearance and delivery, etc.)

Air freight is divided into heavy cargo and bubble cargo.

1CBM=167KG The volume weight is compared with the actual weight. Which one is larger is charged according to which one. Of course, there is a little secret in the air freight bubble, which all colleagues should know, and it is inconvenient to talk about it here. Manufacturers who do not understand can figure it out for themselves.

Air freight structure composition - did you know?

There are many people who do air freight. Do you know how the air freight rates of airlines are calculated? A brief introduction, I hope to help everyone.

Air freight composition:

1. Airfreight freight (charged by the airline)
2.Fuel sur charge fuel surcharge (depending on the airport, the price of the destination point is different, Hong Kong is generally about the first 4 yuan now, before 3.6, last year the highest 4.8, the price is adjusted by the airport, generally 2 yuan to Asia)
3. Security check fee (fixed fee of 1 yuan/kg in Hong Kong)
4. Airport operation fee (HKD283/ticket in Hong Kong, the airport is responsible for transporting goods on the plane, etc.)
5. Terminal fee: 1.72/kg When the goods are handed over to the dealer, the dealer is responsible for the board and other things, and finally handed over to the airport for collection)
6. Air main bill fee: HKD15/bl is the fee for issuing the bill of lading - document of title.

The above is the composition of accounting fees for most airlines, mainly Hong Kong Airport. Because Hong Kong is a super-large free trade port, and Hong Kong Airport is the largest airport in the world, it has fewer restrictions, a wide range, and a large number of cargo aircraft. There are currently 78 airlines. There are more than 100 flights every day, which can be the first choice when the space and service are guaranteed. However, the cost is generally about 2 yuan higher than that in China!

What are the types of air cargo?

When you decide to ship your goods by air, you should know that there are two main types of air freight:

  • Special shipment
  • General shipment

Special cargo allows heavy, hazardous material and temperature managed cargo. It also allows human tissue samples, organs, fragile, value items and animals.
General Crago allows digital machinery, hardware, consumer goods, retail goods, toys, clothing and textiles, and more.
Air cargo is transported using different types of aircraft including passenger, cargo, charter or helicopter.

What are the factors that affect the cost structure of air freight?

Many factors contribute to the cost of air freight, such as:

  • Special event or holiday
  • Traditional/New Regulations
  • Economic situation
  • Technology (robotics, augmented reality, drones, artificial intelligence and big data)
  • Other additional charges such as cargo insurance, airline terminal handling charges, customs clearance and security surcharges are also included in the fee.

Common air freight nouns:

ATA/ATD (Actual Time of Arrival / Actual Time of Departure)
Abbreviation for actual arrival/departure time.

Air Waybill (AWB)
A document issued by or on behalf of the shipper, which is proof of the carriage of goods between the shipper and the carrier.

In this type of warehouse, goods can be stored indefinitely without paying import duties.

Easily handle international returns

If you sell online, you will inevitably be rewarded. While many online sellers see international sales as a one-way ticket to business growth, few seem to think about international returns.
While cross-border trade is a key focus for online retailers looking to expand sales, it also faces challenges. Specifically, one of the main reasons small and midsize companies shy away from international sales is the fear of returns.
That said, the process is getting easier as governments and postal service operators work together to optimize cross-border e-commerce deliveries and returns.

Take care of taxes and duties

One of the biggest challenges mentioned by small businesses when dealing with international returns is managing taxes and duties. This is because different countries—even states, provinces, republics, and territories—have unique tax laws. Failure to properly calculate taxes can result in delayed shipments, or worse, forfeitures.
In some cases, taxation can be a simple process. For example, there are no taxes or duties on items under $40 shipped from the U.S. to Canada. Others may be more complex and the tools available are invaluable for estimating these potential costs.

Why are products being returned?

A lower rate of return means more profit and more satisfied customers. That's why it's important to find out why a product was returned. Here are some common reasons:

  • Customer receives wrong product or wrong size
  • Product does not match product description
  • Damage to the customer when the order arrives

Of course, the reasons may vary depending on what you sell, your industry, and many other factors.

5 Tips for Handling International Returns

1. Let your customers choose how to return

The first and easiest option for you is to leave the return method to your customers. The only thing that is fixed is the address your client has to send to (that is, your address).
Your customers choose which carrier to ship with and which delivery point to ship the package to. However, this is the least customer friendly solution, so it may cost you switching costs in international online stores.
The advantage is that once you receive the product, you can evaluate it yourself and add it back to your inventory faster.
As an online retailer, you are not reimbursed for returns.
However, if the customer returns their entire order (within the EU), you will have to reimburse the outbound shipping. In addition to that, you can choose whether to let your customers pay for returns. You can make this return method more customer-friendly.
But how?
Extend the return period. Your customers will then become attached to the product or care less about it. This also reduces the chance of returns.

2. Arrangements with International Carriers

If you're shipping a lot, including returns, you can make a lot of deals with international carriers.
A good example is fashion chain Zalando, which has a partnership with DHL for both shipping and returns. By making a custom arrangement with a carrier, you can often not only discuss lower rates, but also get more services from the carrier, such as pickups and returns.
Furthermore, with Sendcloud you can offer multiple shipping methods and optimal integration with local and international carriers. In this way, you can provide a more efficient and budget-friendly return process.

3. Subtly offset return costs for your customers

Our research shows that 74% of European consumers would not reorder from an online store if they had to pay for the return themselves. 77% agree that free returns are more convincing to order from online stores more frequently.
However, if you don't want to incur the return costs yourself but still want some form of service, you have another option. You can add a return label to your order and deduct the return fee from your order refund. This method is allowed since you do not need to be reimbursed for returns.
This is great for customers because they don't have to pay immediately when they return the package. This eases the pain of returns, especially the cost of returns.
More importantly, it makes returns a little easier. 37% of European consumers say they would reorder from an online store if they were offered a quick and easy return process.
So it's also in your favor: your customers will come back to you faster thanks to your easy return policy.

4. Outsource international returns to a local party

Have you ever thought about processing returns through your local party? By doing this, you allow customers to return their products to the party you are working with in the country of sale.
This party specialises in handling consignment/returns and therefore ensures that processes, including administration, run as efficiently as possible.
When there are many packages, the parties can return to your warehouse in large quantities, which is cost-effective. Working in this way also allows you to pay back your customers faster, as the product can be received and evaluated faster locally.
This option is relatively expensive because you are doing external collaboration. However, if you receive a lot of returns (like fashion), it can help you save as much as possible.
Create clear protocols and ensure good connections between your online store, inventory and external parties. When you receive a return notification for a product, you can immediately refund the customer or ship a new product, even before your warehouse receives the order.
